Periodontal Care Edmonds, WA
Here at Perrinville Family Dentistry, we offer the best periodontal care possible. Periodontal care refers to all efforts that are geared towards the prevention of periodontal diseases. Periodontal care is offered during your periodic six- month checkup. The term "Periodontal" refers to around the tooth. Periodontal diseases affect the gums and the jaw bone in which the tooth is anchored.
Periodontal disease is mainly caused by poor oral hygiene. A sticky film consisting of food deposits, bacteria, and saliva forms in a space around the teeth called a pocket. The bacteria start to eat away your gums, tooth root, and in extreme cases, the jaw bone. Periodontal care involves measures to ensure proper oral hygiene.
Periodontal Care Procedures
Before we get to the various periodontal care procedures that you should expect when you visit our clinic, it is important to mention that periodontal care starts with you. You must maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing every day, to avoid periodontal diseases. However, ordinary brushing and flossing are never enough to prevent the accumulation of plaque and tartar. That's why you have to keep honoring your checkup appointments.
Our periodontal care procedures start with a periodontal exam. Our periodontist will investigate your teeth for any signs of periodontal diseases. They will be looking for signs such as bleeding gums, receding gums, red swollen or puffy gums, loose teeth, and bad breath. If they note any signs of periodontal disease, a diagnosis will be conducted to ascertain it before treatment commences.
If our periodontist is satisfied that you do not have any signs of periodontal disease, they will conduct an ordinary tooth cleaning procedure to remove any plaque deposits. This will ensure you do not develop the disease anytime in the near feature.
Periodontal disease can be divided into three levels. The first one is gingivitis. Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease where the gums become tender and inflamed because of the tartar. When the condition is left to deteriorate, it turns into Periodontitis.
Periodontitis features symptoms like bleeding gums and highly inflamed gums. The tartar has turned into calculus at this point. Calculus is harder and harbors more bacteria. The final stage is Advanced Periodontitis. At this point, the teeth become loose, and the infection spreads to the tooth root and jawbone. You are at very high risk of losing the tooth at this stage.
Treatment for periodontal disease depends on the severity of the problem. Root scaling and planing are the two procedures used to treat periodontal disease. They are deep cleaning procedures that seek to remove all the calculus and bacteria around your teeth.
Having said that, it is important to note that periodontal disease is easily avoidable. The disease does not just creep up on you. Our periodontal care procedures will help you avoid the disease if you honor your dental checkup schedule with us.
