An important part of your first dental visit is a review of your medical history. While your dental health and your medical history might not seem connected, the two are very much intertwined. Also, certain medical conditions, as well as certain types of medications, can impact the types of treatments we are able to provide you with. At the same time, gum disease and other oral health issues can increase your risk for developing, or worsening existing, medical conditions. Your medical history allows us to customize your treatment to help you maintain your oral, and your overall, health.
Your Dental Cleaning
Dental cleanings are an important part of your dental visits. While brushing and flossing can help to remove plaque, bacteria, and other buildup from the surfaces of your teeth, some areas of your mouth are harder to clean than others. Even if you think you have fully cleaned your mouth, there is still buildup lingering, which can lead to cavities and gum disease. With dental cleanings, we are able to completely clean all surfaces of your teeth, removing even the most stubborn buildup.
A Dental Exam
Dental exam are another important part of regular dental care. Many oral health issues do not exhibit symptoms in their early stages. As a result, you think that everything is fine, even though something is developing. By the time symptoms begin to arise, the issue has progressed into something more serious. Exams allow us to look over the condition of your mouth. We are experienced in detecting the earliest warning signs of many different oral health issues, including cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer, so that you can get the treatment you need right away. Typically, the earlier treatment is provided, the less invasive, and less expensive, it needs to be.
In addition to visually inspecting your mouth, we also take x-rays. These images provide us with a view of the hidden structures of your mouth. We can spot cavities developing between your teeth, root fractures, abscesses, bone loss, impacted teeth, and so much more. With x-rays, we are provided with a complete picture of your mouth so that we can more effectively tailor your treatment.
A Discussion of Your Oral Health
At the end of your appointment, we take the time to have a discussion with you. We will go over any issues that we have found in your mouth and discuss your potential treatment options. We will go over your oral hygiene habits and can provide you with tips on how to improve your oral care at home. Your lifestyle habits, including smoking and drinking, are discussed. Finally, we make sure to take the time to answer your questions and go over any concerns that you have so that you feel confident in the care we provide for you.
