Digital radiographs produce better quality images and expose the patient to less radiation. Traditional x-rays have always required strong radiation to capture an image on photographic films.
In dentistry, digital radiography involves an electronic sensor that is inserted into your mouth to capture images that are then displayed on a screen. Digital radiography is preferred in dentistry over traditional film x-rays for several reasons. The following are some of these benefits.
High-Quality Images
Traditional film x-rays have always been produced on a standard size film, regardless of the part of the body being x-rayed. That made it rather difficult to view and analyze the image, especially images of oral structures. Digital radiography, on the other hand, allows easy manipulation of the image, making the analysis process easier. The image can be magnified, compressed, or enlarged. The contrast and brightness of the image can be adjusted as well. This provides a better way of getting a visual perspective of the image. Overall, digital radiograph images are of clearer.
Less Radiation
Since the advent of x-rays, there has been a great deal of discussion of the number of radiation people should be exposed to. There is, however, universal agreement that radiation exposure should be as minimal as possible. Digital radiographs reduce the amount of radiation one is exposed to during x-ray imaging to a minimum. Digital x-rays expose you to 90 percent less the radiation of film x-rays.

Traditional x-rays featured toxic chemicals that were used to develop photographic films. Digital x-rays are friendly to the environment, as they do not feature photographic films. The films, which would eventually be disposed of, would pollute the environment. It is best that no one has to be exposed to the toxins anymore as well, although lab attendants had to wear protective gear while handling the films. Digital x-rays are easy to use and more effective when conducting a diagnosis.
