Dental exams are meant to ensure you remain in perfect oral health. Unfortunately, brushing and flossing every day can never guarantee your perfect oral health. Dental health issues might still creep on you in one way or the other. It is paramount that you get checked regularly. The American Dental Association recommends a checkup every six months.

A dental exam is a compressive oral health checkup. During the exam, your mouth and all organs related to your oral health are investigated for any abnormalities. The exams encompass aspects such as hygiene, injuries, infections, and any other possible abnormality. Dental exams aim to prevent oral health issues; you’d rather these issues are prevented rather than having to treat them.

The Dental Exam Procedure

Our dental specialists will be investigating your oral structures for all possible oral health problems. Normally, the examination will start with a visual and physical exam. Gary J. Jacky, DMD will visually inspect all the visible dental structures in your mouth and note any abnormalities that might be there. They will be looking for sores, swellings, unusual colorations, teeth chippings, and fractures, etc. They will then use their hand to feel the soft tissues in your mouth. Any lumps or growths that have not swelled up can be felt this way.

If our specialists determine there is a need for further investigation, x-rays might be taken. X-rays help to investigate structure and organs that are not accessible physically or visually, such as jawbones. They are also used to check for tumors and cysts.

The dental exam procedure is, in most cases, capped with a dental cleaning. Our hygienist will check your dental hygiene and map out an appropriate cleaning procedure for you. Any plaque or tartar present on your teeth and gums will be removed. They will then brush, floss, and polish your teeth to ensure they are sparkling clean.

Risk Levels

Different people face different levels of risk when it comes to dental health. We’ve mentioned above that you should get checked every six months. That’s just a general standard. After you’ve had a checkup with one of our specialists, they’ll advise on how often you should get checked. Some people are exposed to more risks of having oral health problems than others. Among those with high risks include pregnant women, smokers, and people with weak immune systems. Health conditions, such as diabetes, might also necessitate more frequent checkups.

Your checkup schedule is, therefore, not definite. It can change at any time, depending on your overall health condition. People who have suffered injuries in their mouth might need to go for a checkup more frequently than they used to before the injuries.
