Dental Cleanings
Edmonds, WA

Here at Perrinville Family Dentistry, we conduct dental cleanings to restore the health of our client’s gums, as well as the aesthetic appeal of their teeth. Cleaning is a dental procedure whose aim is to prevent periodontal diseases and other teeth hygiene related issues. Cleanings are necessitated by skipping your periodic professional dental exams. We always recommend that you get a professional dental exam and clean up every six months.

There is an area between your teeth and gums called a pocket. This pocket is often checked during your regular dental exam. The pocket grows larger as one approaches adulthood. Tartar accumulates in these pockets, even after you’ve done your normal brushing. This tartar is often removed during the six-months checkups. If you don’t go for these checkups, the tartar starts to harbor bacteria which causes periodontal disease.

Dental Cleanings Process

Dental cleanings are conducted to get rid of the tartar and bacteria in the pockets, disinfect the area to kill the bacteria and clean your teeth. A process known as scaling is used to remove all the plaque and tartar that might have accumulated on the teeth and the pockets. Our dental hygienists perform scaling procedures using electric and ultrasonic instruments to ensure all the tartar has been removed.

Our dentist will then clean the surface of your teeth and sometimes go as far as the root of the tooth if necessary. They will then disinfect your teeth to ensure any bacterium present has been eliminated. The whole procedure is carried out within two visits. Our dentists will schedule a follow-up visit to ensure your teeth and gums are getting better as well.

A dental cleaning procedure might also involve teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is mainly done to remove teeth coloration and improve the aesthetic appearance of the teeth. Teeth whitening will often be carried out after you’ve healed for the actual cleaning procedure. You may have to wait a couple of weeks for the gums to heal if you had undergone scaling and root planning procedures during the cleaning.

As mentioned earlier, ordinary brushing and flossing at home are not enough to guarantee oral hygiene. It would help if you still got professional dental cleaning performed at our office after a while to avoid periodontal diseases. While the procedure might not always be as deep as the one outlined above, it always seeks to get rid of the plaque that you miss with your brush. Here are some more reasons why professional dental cleanings are essential:

Avoiding cardiovascular diseases and stroke – there is a strong connection between gum disease and cardiovascular diseases as well as stroke. Keeping your teeth clean will help avoid gum disease and in extension, reduce your chances of getting a heart attack or stroke.

Professional dental cleanings do not cost as much as other dental procedures unless they involve root planing. They are often covered by your dental health cover. As such, adhering to your cleanings religiously can save you the money you’d have to spend if you get gum disease and other oral health complications.
