A root canal is an oral or dental procedure that involves the removal of the soft tissue at the center of the tooth, known as the pulp. The pulp comprises connective tissue, nerves, and blood vessels that help the tooth grow and function as a sensory, providing sensations of cold or heat. The procedure is meant to treat severe tooth decay and dental abscess.
What to expect during a root canal procedure
After an appointment is made, the dentist examines the conditions of the tooth and surrounding region's tissue to assess the damage and signs of infection by taking a series of X-ray images. The dental surgeon administers local anesthesia to numb the area surrounding the tooth. This also helps to minimize discomfort and pain during the procedure.
A hole is drilled down the tooth's center, and the pulp or infected debris is removed. The dentist then thoroughly scrubs and scraps the debris and surrounding drilled region of the tooth to ensure no further infection occurs after filling due to the remnants and the debris is flushed off. The teeth or tooth is then isolated and dried using a rubber sheet placed in the region surrounding the tooth.
The tooth is then sealed on the same day or scheduled for a few days later. If the filling is scheduled for a few days later, a temporary sealant is used to cover the drilled hole to prevent food remains from lodging in the cavity. The final step in the procedure includes the addition or placement of a crown on the tooth's surface to protect it and restore it to normal functioning.
A patient can expect pain and sensitivity in the region, which some OTC drugs can help relieve. This could be due to inflammation in the region and usually subsides after a few days.
