What Type of Treatment Do Your New Fillings Need?If you get a new puppy, you need to groom it and exercise it. If you get a new car, you should wash it and wax it. Likewise, if you get a new dental filling, you should care for it. After you get a dental filling, it is good to consider this advice to avoid discomfort and learn how to care for your dental filling.

What to do With my New Dental Filling

Many people want to know what to eat after you have a new dental filling. The answer depends on the type of dental filling you received. White fillings, which are made of composite, instantly harden. In fact, before you leave our office, your composite filling is ready for action. Feel free to eat and drink. If you have a metal filling, you will need to wait at least 24 hours for the metal filling to become hard enough for you to eat solid foods. You can drink water and have protein shakes to get you through the first day. Regardless of what type of filling you receive, you should wait until the local anesthetic wears off before you eat. We also suggest avoiding extremely hot or cold foods for the first week after a new filling.

This may be obvious, but make sure you talk and eat normally after you get a new filling. If your filling is higher than your tooth, you may feel a sharp edge. Let us know if your filling is uncomfortable in any way; we may need to reshape your filling. Sometimes it can be difficult to get the filling smoothed perfectly the first time.

Lastly, you should return to regularly brushing your teeth. This includes your new dental filling. If you have a new sensitivity after you have received a filling, you can try toothpaste specifically formulated for sensitive teeth.
