What Can Cause Dental Cracks?

What Can Cause Dental Cracks?Dental cracks are partial fractures that appear on the crowns of the teeth. They might also extend under your gums. Cracks can cause acute pain before and after mastication (chewing). This is commonly referred to as cracked tooth syndrome. Repetitive and frequent forces damage your tooth structure, resulting in a minor re-structure. Even though it is the elderly that are more likely to have cracked teeth, you can experience them at any age, depending on your activities and lifestyle habits. Apart from cavities, there are other causes of dental cracks. Read on to find out more about them.

Teeth Grinding

Also known as Bruxism, tooth grinding is a condition where you clench or gnash your teeth. If you have this condition, you may unconsciously clench your teeth when you are awake (awake Bruxism). You may also grind or clench them when you are asleep (sleep bruxism). This condition is one of the leading sources of dental cracks. Continued grinding will weaken your tooth's enamel, damaging it in the process.

Chewing Hard Substances

When you bite hard substances, you might cause teeth cracks. Even though the tooth enamel is tough, it does have limits. Excessive wear and tear can cause teeth to chip. This is what happens when you bite into hard substances. Hard candy and icy foods are some of the foods that can cause dental cracks. It is important to avoid chewing hard substances that can cause damage to your teeth.

Falls and Accidents

When you get involved in an accident, your teeth might be cracked. Engaging in vigorous activities like playing football without proper safety gear can also cause dental cracks. In some cases, such accidents not only cause dental cracks but can lead to jaw dislocation.
