Gum disease comes in many stages and levels. At the very beginning, it may be nothing more than sensitive gums. In the most advanced cases it could be a roaring infection that has caused the loss of several teeth and a massive amount of bone density in the jaw. The early stage of gum disease is usually categorized as gingivitis, while the latter stages are referred to as Periodontitis. It is in this later period that tooth decay and loss become more common. Periodontitis
This is when the bacteria and resulting infection have had an extended period of time to grow and spread all throughout the mouth and under the gum line, creating a number of oral health symptoms and issues. The bacteria have been eating away at the tissues and bone, which keep the gums and teeth connected, creating the sensation of shifting positions and less stability. As the teeth decay from the root up, losing them becomes increasingly likely with the passage of time.
How to Treat It
Once it is at this stage, simple fixes and minor treatment options are no longer viable. Advanced gum disease is generally treated with deep and thorough cleanings, scaling and root planing procedures, and even gum surgery, depending on the severity of the individual case. The goal is simply to get the infection to stop spreading so that the mouth can begin the process of healing and recovering. These methods of treatment help with everything from the dry, burning sensation to assisting the gums reattach to the tooth for a healthier, firmer fit.
