What Happens If You Brush Too Often?

Man brushing his teeth before visiting Perrinville Family Dentistry in Edmonds, WABrushing your teeth is one of the most important things you can do to your teeth. We recommend that everyone brush twice a day, once in the morning after breakfast, and once in the evening right before bed- this ensures that built-up plaque is scrubbed away. Plaque leads to tartar and cavities and thus keeping your mouth clear of it is the goal.

So, does this mean that brushing more often is better? Not exactly, the saying ™less is more™ applies to brushing your teeth, and here is why that is.

Why You Shouldn't Brush Excessively

You should avoid brushing too often (4+ times a day) for the same reason we tell people not to brush too forcefully. For one, if you are doing it often enough, brushing can slowly wear your tooth enamel away even if you are doing it gently. This is especially so if you are using a paste that advertises itself as a whitening toothpaste. This kind of toothpaste has a high abrasion level, which is perfectly safe for normal brushing habits, but can irritate your gums and harm your enamel if used in excess.

It is best to stick to the standard brushing schedule and rinse with mouthwash throughout the day if you simply want a clean feeling. We recommend a non-alcoholic mouthwash for heavy rinsers as it won't have the drying effect that alcohol does on the mouth. You can also create a baking soda and saltwater rinse if you don't have any mouthwash handy.

In short, brushing too often is a bit counterintuitive. If your goal is to whiten your teeth quickly, we offer a whitening procedure that will give you the results you are seeking much faster and safer than using up all of your toothpaste in a couple of days!
