If you have severe gum disease, we at Perrinville Family Dentistry may recommend several types of gum surgeries. The most common cause of gum disease is when bacterial plaque builds up in your mouth and results in a breakdown of your soft and hard tissues. However, gum disease may also be a side effect of chronic auto-immune illnesses or taking certain medication.

Types of Gum Surgery

At Perrinville Family Dentistry, Gary J. Jacky, DMD and may recommend the procedures below if your gums require surgery to become healthy again:
[[[DIVSTYLE:margin-left:25px|[[[BulletList:Pocket Reduction/ Gingival Flap Surgery: this surgery involves making an incision in the gums, folding back a flap of the gum and removing the bacteria stuck to the surface of the tooth root. The flap is then sutured close tightly against the tooth.

What to Expect During Gum Surgery

Before the surgery, we will give you an injection of local anesthesia to numb your gums. You will also be given a professional dental cleaning and we will ask you about any chronic health conditions or medication you take.
After the surgery, we will close all wounds with sutures. These stitches may be dissolvable. If not, you will be required to come back in 7 to 10 days to have them removed. We may also add a special dressing called a periodontal pack over the surgical site.

Most people only have mild to moderate pain after surgery that can be managed by over-the-counter painkillers. We may prescribe antibiotics to help prevent infection and you may suffer some bleeding and gum swelling after surgery. These will go abate in a few days; however, if the conditions worsen, call us at (425) 616-0620 to get an urgent appointment.
