Scaling is when our dentist removes all the plaque and tartar above the gum line. Even with daily brushing and flossing, it would surprise you how much, and how quickly, tartar and plaque can develop on your teeth. We make sure that we clean down to the pocket below your teeth.
Root Planing
Our dentist will start root planing. This involves sliding a tool down below the gum line into the pockets below. Our dentist will then scrape the bacteria off the tooth down completely to the root. This removes the plaque that is not reachable with a toothbrush or floss. Next, an ultrasonic scaler will slide down into the pocket of each tooth, it vibrates at a high frequency, which removes stains, plaque, and calculus. Also, ultrasonic scalers create small air bubbles. They serve an interesting function. The bacteria living in the pockets cannot survive in the presence of oxygen, these bubbles help to destroy them.
Both procedures clean your teeth; However, we should mention, even though scaling and root planing disrupt the growth of the bacteria. Some bacteria can remain and may settle back into the pocket where they reproduce. The number of bacteria doubles every time they reproduce, reaching plaque and tartar levels in as few as 90 days.
