If you have an abscess, it is important to seek out treatment. The dangers that come from an untreated abscess are not worth trying to ignore it.
While there are times when you need to seek out immediate treatment for an abscess, there are also times when you can wait for a short time before coming into our office. While you are waiting you need to deal with one of the symptoms of an abscess. You need to know how to manage the pain.
The Main Symptoms You cannot fix an abscess at home, but there are some things you can do to manage the main symptoms you will likely experience. The two symptoms you can treat at home are pain and swelling. The pain is sometimes a result of the swelling so that is the first thing to manage. A warm salt-water rinse can help reduce the swelling. Mix a half teaspoon of table salt with a half cup of warm tap water.
Swish the water around in the mouth for 2 minutes and then spit it out. The second option to manage swelling is a cold compress. Put ice cubes in a dry towel and hold over the affected area for 15 minutes.
Over the Counter Medications
One of the best ways to manage the pain associated with an abscess is through over the counter pain medications. The key is to take these as directed. Do not take extra hoping that more is better. It can cause more problems than it can help. There are also topical anesthetics that can provide some relief from both the pain and the swelling associated with an abscess. If you are not sure what type of over the counter medications you should use, ask us when you call.
