Dental anxiety is real. People are afraid to visit our office for a variety of reasons. Anyone that has dental anxiety may struggle with their oral health. They may avoid heading to our office when that is what they need.
Delaying work on your oral health can lead to more problems. Because of the problems that avoiding our office causes, it is important to find ways to overcome the dental anxiety. One way to do that is to learn more about the procedure you are going to have at our office. Knowledge is a great way to conquer the fear you have.
What is Dental Anxiety?
When a person heads to our office they may have some fear. Dental anxiety is the term for that fear. The amount of anxiety a person has and their ability to overcome it will vary. Some people have such a high degree of dental anxiety that they never come into our office. The result when that happens is problems with the oral health and eventually with their overall health.
The anxiety can come from the sights and sounds of the office or it can come from the fear that we will find something wrong with the teeth and gums. Most of the fear comes from the unknown. Overcoming the unknown is the best way to reduce the amount of dental anxiety you feel.
How to Get Rid of the Unknown If the dental anxiety comes from the fear of the unknown, the best solution is to learn more about what happens in the office. There are a few ways to do that. You can search the internet to find out what happens during a visit or during a specific procedure.
Another way to reduce anxiety is to visit our office without getting any dental work done. Take the time to learn what the office looks and feels like. Become familiar with the office and how we work. The more familiar you are with the office and the staff, the less anxiety you will feel.
The last thing to do to reduce anxiety is to ask questions about what will happen during your visit. The more questions you ask, the more you will learn and the more comfortable you will get.
