Despite being easily preventable, periodontal diseases cause pain and affect many people globally. These diseases can cause inflammation of the gums, receding gums, and even tooth loss in extreme cases.

Thus, patients should seek treatment for periodontal diseases when the diseases are in the early stages. This will help to prevent the disease from progressing and becoming detrimental to their oral health. Another way to prevent periodontal diseases is to educate yourself on how these diseases spread.

How Do Periodontal Diseases Spread?

Periodontal diseases occur when bacteria attack the gums and cause an infection. These bacteria travel through saliva. This means that if you come into contact with saliva from an infected person, the bacteria in the saliva can transfer to your mouth. This contact can occur during kissing, sharing of cups or silverware, coughing, and sneezing. However, coming into contact with saliva from an infected person does not always mean you will get the disease.

Are Periodontal Diseases Treatable?

Yes, dentists can treat periodontal diseases. One of the biggest misconceptions about periodontal diseases is that they are not treatable, but this is untrue. Most times, your dentist will put you on medication to prevent the spread of bacteria. However, in severe cases, dental surgery and root scaling may be the only solution.

It is best to prevent periodontal diseases before they progress and damage your teeth or gums. You can prevent periodontal diseases by maintaining good oral hygiene. Therefore, make sure that you brush your teeth at least twice daily, floss daily, and keep up with your dental appointments. In addition, make sure that you incorporate an antibacterial mouthwash in your dental hygiene routine to keep bacteria at bay.
